It sure does look like the Sphinx. :) Judging from their manes, these look like two young males just starting out on their own as they seem to be about 2-3 years of age or were there others with them that are just not in the picture?
What a great place to lay and look out for food as I am sure they can see a long distance off from there.
Joan, actually they were three but one was sleeping, almost snoring (LOL), next to the dead zebra they had just hunted. It was SO HOT and they were so tired that they moved to the shade of the jeep and remained there. I have never been so close to lions! :-) I will soon post the close-up shots.
Oh they are Lord and Master of their domain! So at one with their environment. Beautifully executed and titled. I can't wait to see the close ups. You are a brave man!
That must have been a great experience Jose. I know that it gets VERY hot up there. At times, it reaches 40 degrees C by 7am!! Yet, these are some of the best areas for game so we go there again and agian. :) My father used to say I am a sucker for punishment, but oh, what satisfaction!! LOL!!
Pussycat, Pussycat I love you. Yes, I do ! You and your pussycat nose ! What's new pussycat ? Woah, Woah ... Tom Jones... sorry... the devil made me sing it. :-D Gorgeous shot, JM.

I'm thinking I hope you have a very, very long lens. :) Beautiful photo!
Beautiful photos, I love all the big cats. Diane
I like the extra info you gave in the comments about it being a hot day etc. Give the context of the shot.
Meow! So very beautiful. Hopefully you were safe aboard your safari vehicle when you took this shot.
It's easy to see how the lion was chosen for the sphinx body. They are so majestic.
