Joan, we were having a light snack outside the jeep at dusk; I believe this guy was attracted by the smell of what we were eating, so we had to get into the (open) vehicle. He walked around it and almost sniffed my leg right after I took this photo! :-)
i like the hyenas, I find these animals so special! Besides, I do not think it was as big !.... always great courage! Attention to you anyway! bye.....
LOL!! I am sure you got a fright. They get very brazen in some areas and loose their fear of man and so become dangerous, very much like what has happened to the baboons in some areas.

I don't think you'd want to mess with him! :) Great shot.
Wow - what a spectacular shot and an amazing story you shared in your comment!
Wow amazing shot! I would have been really scared had that critter sniffed my leg.
The hyena seems to be afraid of something. Great capture.
greetings
Wow, I have never seen one up close and personal. This shot is fantastic, thanks for sharing.
That's amazing that the hyena wasn't afraid of people at all. Nice of it to get within flash range, though.
Thanks for the info on Terra del Fuego.

What an extraordinary photo! I've never seen a hyena except for in the zoo. Amazing!

Cute shot. Hope you used a long lens!
It resembles a dog a bit but I would NOT want to pet it!
