Fascinating and they are not all the same type.
They seemed to be gathering on a wet spot. Are they drinking water? Would be interesting to find out.
@Hilke: Yes, they are getting moisture from the ground.
@Hilke: The behavior is called puddling. Butterflies need certain minerals that they cannot get from eating nectar alone, so they visit still puddles that contain dissolved minerals from the soil.
Thanks for the info and the link. I guess it's similar to Macaws eating clay.
