They seemed to be gathering on a wet spot. Are they drinking water? Would be interesting to find out.

@Hilke: Yes, they are getting moisture from the ground.

@Hilke: The behavior is called
puddling. Butterflies need certain minerals that they cannot get from eating nectar alone, so they visit still puddles that contain dissolved minerals from the soil.
