Portuguese Man o'War

One of the most dangerous jellyfish on a beach south of
Tulum (Quintana Roo), Mexico
*
The common name comes from a portuguese war ship type of the 15th and 16th century, the caravel, which had triangular sails similar in outline to the bladder of this creature.

Beautiful colour Jose. Ours are a lighter blue than that but they sure do hurt if they sting you!!

Reminds me of a line from the movie Bladerunner. "Talk about beauty and the beast. She's both." I love the otherworldliness of sea creatures and the way many of them seem to be so electric. It must have been truly amazing to see that shockingly colorful creature against the pure white sand.

So, a Portuguese guy had to go to Mexico to find one? I really like seeing this. I did't know they were so blue! Maybe it changed color after it died. We used to sell some in my store, but they were light purple. I can't get them any more :( Also, I didn't know capybaras were rarely attacked by crocodilians. Do you know the reason? I'm happy you found this new blog. Today I hope to announce the grant the project is getting from the Tapir Fund, then we will have more great stuff for the new blog. If you ever need a guide in Colombia, contact Emilio!

Ugh! We have lots of these in Florida...I think the number depends upon the time of year. They do provide a nasty sting!
