I think these are supposed to be dangerous. But we had them when I lived in Phoenix, Arizona. That was back in the early 50s and I was in high school. Ours were brown and fuzzy. I have to admit that were a couple of times when I put one on the back of a girl sitting in class in front of me. Have you ever heard a teenage girl scream at the top of her lungs in a small classroom?

That usually caused quite a commotion. Got me in a little trouble, too. But ... hey, I was a kid. :-)

Like snakes, they tap into our deepest fears.

We use to play with spiders when we were children. Somehow we instinctively manage to avoid the poisonous ones and definitely the tarantula! They are most ferocious when they have eggs to guard!

Jacob!!!! That's insane! Yes they are dangerous. I was 12 when we visited my mother's youngest sister living in a small town in Arizona. She had lived there for many years and had never seen a tarantula. She told us she'd die if she did. In the week we were there, I saw three, and almost stomped on the first one in my bare feet, but my mother saw it and stopped me. As Jacob says, they were nowhere as fine colored as this one, JM.
